In April 2009 I was convicted of petty theft and I got a fine and community service. I paid the fine and did the community service then when I turned in my completed community service certificate the lady said the record is closed now. I have been applying for jobs and whenever it says if I have been convicted of a misdemeanor I put yes but it says not to put yes if the record has been annulled, expunged, sealed, pardoned, erased or impounded and I dont know if I have to put yes or not. The lady at court said it was closed but I dont know what that means and if it means one of those.

Contact the court or the probation office and inquire.

It sounds as if you received some sort of a deferred adjudication or deferred sentencing. If so, your answer would be no. Ask, and you shall be enlightened.

A record being "closed" is not the same as being expunged.

Check with the court as to the status of your case. You can also have a records check done on yourself to determine what your state criminal offender record shows: http://www.ag.ca.gov/fingerprints/security.php
