Medical Bills

my mother was in a serious one car acident last year. She now has two medical bill companies caoming after her for money. She doesnt own anything, and i mean nothing, not even a car, or home.
The only thing that is coming in is her disability check. Out of this check she pays rent, her medicare coverage, her regular health coverage, her food, and utilities(such as gas, water, electric).
I have old these two companies she doesnt own anything!

My question is can they take her disability check?
What can me and my mother do?

My understanding of American law is that a Social Security Disability cheque cannot be garnished (subject to a few exceptions). I suggest your mother talk to a credit counselling agency or legal aid lawyer. She might consider filing for bankruptcy, or at least telling the medical bill companies that they will force her into bankruptcy in which they will get nothing at all, and see if she can work out some type of arrangement.
