My girlfriend and I have lived together for two years here in TN. She has sole custody of her 9 yr old daughter and the daughter goes to her dad's every weekend. My girlfriend was just told the other day that there is a law in TN stating that a mother cannot live with her boyfriend by law, that if the dad takes it to court that she and I live together he'll get custody hands down. She of course is now freaking out about this, I've talked to several ppl about this and no one has ever heard of it but none of them were lawyers and there is nothing outlined in the divorce degree about whether she is not allowed to live with a man unmarried. Her daughter and I have a great relationship, and my girlfriend and I are planning on getting married I just haven't graduated with my Masters degree yet so we haven't got the money or time to get married yet. Should we be worried that my living with her and her daughter will allow her ex husband to easily get custody? Ultimately we need to know if there is such a law in TN banning her to live with me while she has custody of her minor child?

You are referring to old laws that considered unmarried relations to be "meretricious." Mostly those laws have been reversed and are no longer in effect. I can't determine if they are or aren't in TN. It use to be true but mostly now it is not true. Check with an attorney, should be a cheap request.

whoever told your gf that obviously doesnt know the law. unless dad can prove you are a danger to her child, you and she have nothing to worry about.

For now, just stop listening to Dad. If I were you, just stay out of everything and let mom deal wth him.
