I have received a letter from my deceased mother's nursing home. (actually their lawyer sent it) They want me to pay over $1200 for her final bill. I was her payee for SSI and her POA. Am I liable for her bill? She died with no money. There is a debate over the amount, it should be around $250 which I would pay. I don't want to do anything that would make me liable for a debt that I don't need to pay. Mom died without any money, my sister and I paid for her funeral and would have to come up with the money ourselves. Your quick reply would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Rick

Are they asking you to pay for it personally? My thought is they are looking for money from the estate and demanding you pay it as the person who had control over the money. As your common sense is very much intact :) , you are correct that you shouldn't be liable for the debt of another simply because you were administrating their affairs.
