a company filed a lawsuit against me regarding their IP. in their complaint they list they have copyrights (and give registration numbers) and u.s. certificates of it. when i looked up their copyrights, its actually for other items. the items are similar in title except they aren't as they are claiming were infringed in the lawsuit. is that legal to do? isn't this frivolous? woudn't that be grounds for dismissal?

I also, would be interested in what a professional opinion of this is. What does the law say about false claims? Is it illegal, and is it something a prosecutor would go for?

Nobody can answer this question without seeing the documents. If it's a frivolous lawsuit then you make a motion to dismiss with your grounds and demand attorneys fees since there was no bona fide dispute in filing the case. It was simply an instance of using the court for intimidation, not justice.
