How to get employer to pay

A former employer of mine owes me a significant amount of money due to unpaid wages (i.e. they could not make payroll at the time while I was working there). I have since moved on to a different company but am wondering what options I have to encourage them to pay money owed to me.

I have filed with the VA DOL, but my claim is above their monetary limit (15K). They told me that my only recourse is through the courts. I know the general district court has a limit of 15K as well, but I don't really know what other options I have. Since they owe me about 20K, I don't think it's worth going to a circuit court.

I am pretty sure I can get a judgement against them in district court as I have a written contract and I have a letter from my employer stating that they owe me a specific amount. Once I get a judgement, what can I do to get them to pay? The reason that I am asking is I know my employer will not pay unless forced to (this has happened to many of the other employees as well).

Thanks,
R
