Other Immigration Law how to get an extension of stay as canadian?

I'm planning to take some incidental studies next April (two courses) and attend the Semicon conference next july in San Francisco.
I would like to extend my stay in US for another 6 months (i have been in US for 5 months so far). I have called the USCIS twice, and one person there told me to exit and enter again, the other told me to file the form I-539. Which way is correct?

Any canadians did it before? if yes, How?
I do not have I-94

I would first try the option that does NOT include leaving.
