how to cancel vacation club membership

i am an American citizen who purchased a timeshare/vacation club membership while on holiday. i regeret my purchase and realize i can not afford it. the membership was bought on 3 weeks ago, for which i paid a down pymnt of $3000. the first monthly installment due to begin Feb 15. i have not used ANY benefits as the contract is "still new". the purchase was made in Cancun, Mexico. How can i cancel? ive spoken to the club and they only said i am obliged to the contract. i feel it is early enough that they may "win" by keeping my dwnpymnt, and i gained nothing..please help
