How do I dispose of abandoned vehicle left on my property

Several years ago I found an abandoned vehicle on my property, no registration, only a vin number. Local police could find no record of anyone reporting it lost or stolen. I put it in storage hoping to find the owner. It is not worthless, but now it is not worth what is owed on the storage. Can I sell it to recover the storage fees, or otherwise dispose of it (junk yard), or do I have a legal obligation to first make more attempts to find the owner? Someone said I should put a legal notice in the paper first, for some period of time, to make sure there is no lien holder, then I can go to the DMV and request that it be registered to me. Do I have to do that through a court first?
