Guardianship of 17 year old sister

I have a 17 year old sister that came to stay with my wife and I a week ago. She was adopted at the age of 6 weeks. Knowing my parents and the verbal abuse that I took as a child now she is going through the same experience. They tell her that they wish she had never adopted her and call her vulgar names. My sister wants to go back home but my parents will not allow it and called today to say that she can come get all of her stuff and has papers for me to sign..... She turns 18 in January.... Help?

I'd make sure to retain any and all communication from your "parents" pertaining to your sister.

Unfortunately, your parents are responsible for the care and custody of your sister until she attains the age of 18.

It doesn't matter how she became their daughter, she is LEGALLY their daughter.

They can't just kick her out and dispose of her like she is garbage.

But, it seems as if she is being abused emotionally.

MS does not permit such conduct and/or harm to befall children.

Yes, Sissy is still a child.

In accordance with Section 43-21-105 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, Annotated, "Abused Child means a child whose parent, guardian or custodian or any person responsible for his care or support, whether legally obligated to do so or not, has caused or allowed to be caused upon said child sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, emotional abuse, mental injury, non-accidental physical injury or other maltreatment. Provided, however, that physical discipline, including spanking, performed on a child by a parent, guardian or custodian in a reasonable manner shall not be deemed abuse under this section."

In regard to physical abuse, it is important to understand that although parents, guardians and custodians are legally allowed to utilize corporal punishment, they are not allowed to cause bruises, marks, or other injuries to children when utilizing corporal punishment. Any evidence of such will constitute abuse by the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
Who is considered to be a child?

A person who has not reached his/her eighteenth birthday.
Who do I call to make a report?

A report may be made to the local county Department of Human Services or to the Hotline, 1-800-222-8000, a statewide toll-free 24-hour line that is answered seven days a week.
What happens when I call in a report?

When a report is received, the report is screened by a supervisor to decide whether it should be investigated. If the report warrants an investigation, it is then assigned to a worker. First, the worker will interview the child privately. Then every member of the household is seen and interviewed privately. At least one non-family member (teacher, doctor, etc.) who knows the child is interviewed. When the facts back up an abuse report, the Department will make a report to the district attorney within 72 hours. The district attorney determines whether criminal charges can be filed.

Thank you for your post. My dad has just told her via phone conversation that he has never viewed her as a blood daughter that things would be different if she was... My parents are selfish people anyway but still our parents and you try to make things work. But those days are gone. The DHS has already been contacted via the high school due to my sister broke down to a councelor one time before. I'm not sure how they will react to another instance but I hope they will do something. Like I said they are our parents but she is a child and enough is enough... again thanks for the contacts...

im sorry your sister is going through this. some people are not fit to be parents. glad she has you and your wife to love and take care of her
