Former employer wont go away

Ok, I was "let go" from a job in the begining of Sept. I didnt sign anything and it took them two weeks for me to get my final pay check. NOW, my former boss sent me urgent messages in my yahoo inbox and through myspace telling me to call her personal cell phone while she as at work. When I called she said that my former apartment had called and she took a message, which she read off. Now, I have letters and emails from other people stating that when they called they were told I no longer worked there and I KNOW she is just trying to be catty. To make matters worse, she is spreading lies to people I still talk to so when I go out (for example my sons' soccer game) I have to spend an hour explaining the situation to clear my name. Can she do this? Is there anyway I can get her to stop? It's really getting to be too much.
