My ex-girlfriend and I had a child back in October. We gave the child up for adoption. At that time I was placed on an Official State of Georgia Vital Records Birth Certificate. Since our breakup, things have been what most would call nasty. She has threatened to have me removed from the contact list and the birth certificate. Can she do that? Is there anything that I can do to prevent her from muddying the water up for the adoptive family and my potential limited relationship with my daughter? This is an open adoption and I would like to see and/or hear from the family from time to time. This mess spilling over into their life could disrupt any chances that I have. I am a good person with a good job and a clean background. There isn't any reason for her to do any of the above things to me. She is a vindictive person. We gave the child up because we were young, just starting our careers with limited resources, and for now obvious reasons. It may have been a mistake but life has to go on. It made sense at the time, I guess..... Any help is greatly appreciated.
P.S
The nexus of our breakup was that I discovered that my-ex had lied to me on more than one occasion and ran off to see another guy over 200 miles away. She says "nothing happened". Those deceptive acts happened just recently. As a result, I am skeptical of most anything she said or did during our two year relationship. I am 90% certain that the child is mine but I have not had a DNA test to confirm that. Am I within my rights to demand that a test be done or is that something that only the birth mother can request? If I am within my rights, should I submit that request to the lawyer, the family, my ex, or all of the above? Also, is there anyway that I can present this to the family and the lawyer without looking like a jerk. I hate to dump my situation and dirty details from my previous relationship on others but I may need to given the circumstances. Any thoughts on that point?
