designated driving business

Questions about what type of insurance is needed if any for a designated driving business in Ca. Im looking into trying to start a designated driving business. We pick people up and drive them home in their cars. My thoughts are if we hire drivers as independent contractors so as to avoid workers comp. and require them to have full coverage we should be fine. Than just have an umbrella policy for the what ifs!

Your reasoning is logical, but you live in CA. You might wish to contact the agency that regulates taxis, limos, and jitneys. Logic tells me they'll drive (no pun intended) this. Your drivers will most likely be required to have a chauffeur's license and perhaps a hack license, too. The city or locales you operate might have a say as well!
