I put down a $975 deposit on a used 2000 Nissan Altima with someone I know, who owns a Auto Body shop. I was to give him the balance of $700 after he did the brakes and I was going to pick up the car the following week. He has put me off for over a month and I want my money back, and now he is not answering my calls. What can I do to recoup my money. I have a receipt, Image of the check I gave him, and numerous text messages detailing our complete transaction, including his promise to refund my money.

Send the person a demand letter, requesting he return your money.

Send the letter via the UPS as a registered, certified, or Priority Mail; signature requested along with proof of delivery.

Retain all of the documents, including a copy of the letter you send.

Of course, he will ignore it.

Allow about two weeks to pass and then file a small claims lawsuit.

this is the website for Broward County small claims lawsuits.

Read it, and prepare your case:

County Civil - Broward County Clerk of Courts

The cost to file is $30 for your amount, plus the cost ot have the deadbeat served by a deputy.

Be prepared to prevail, and then you'll have to chase his assets to get your money.

You only walk off Judge Judy with a check.

In the real world, you get a pretty paper saying Deadbeat Dobbins owes Good Guy Jones $1,000.
