Assault & Battery Cut throat?

My friends brother is 19 and lives with his mom and step dad. His step dad assaulted him and cut his throat the other day, 1 cm from his jugular, and he is pressing charges. What will he likely get in prison, if any prison time? Could he try for att. murder or is it only assault?

It's up to the prosecutor. I think most would charge attempted murder in this case with the expectation of a plea arrangement.

That's up to the DA but they take all circumstances of the crime into consideration.
