I am applying for a teaching position. The application has a section where it asks whether I have a criminal record. I answered NO. However I was arrested for shoplifting a pack of cigarettes 12 years ago in a different state. Will a small misdemeanor like this have dropped or will they find this. It is in a different state. Should I indicate this on my application. Will I have this held against me for being a reckless teenager 12 years ago?

The misdemeanor will be on your background check. You have to expunge it….it does not just go away. Well, some people get lucky and their lower class misdemeanors where never filled appropriately and do not show. You can do an instant background check online today and see. It might not be the most accurate, but you could check it out. Most of the sites are accurate. It might not affect you much if you are honest about it in the start…………..they will understand, its been twelve years!
