I was offered a plea of no contest for an assault charge over 20 years ago.
The possesion of a firearm. Even though I was innocent the judge told me that if I pled no contest that the court would reduce the charge to a misdemeanor. Being that I was working at that time and couldn't afford constant court dates. So I agreed to the plea bargan. Now I'm wanting to apply for a position with the police department and know they will no doubt see this on my previous record. However, after trying to obtain this from county resources I couldn't. They said the records are not available after so many years.
What can I do to have this expunged from my record?
Any advice would be appreciated...

Well, a clean record except for a misdemeanor over 5 years old (and you have 20) means you can get it expunged. . . for which, I am sure, a lawyer would be most helpful. Probably best to go through the listings for a good criminal defense attorney.

What state was this in? What state are you looking to work as a peace officer in? And what were the specific statutes you were charged under?
