If you can, pay the bond for him.
The person can generally make a motion asking for a bond reduction. He'll need to present a statement as to why he can't pay the current amount. However, just not being able to pay isn't the only thing considered - they look at the charge & other various factors.

I say unless you can throw away $1200, wait.
A bail bonding agent will take at least $1200. That's $1200 you'll never see again.
Now, if he will miss work and he earns $600 a day when working, maybe you will just pay a bondsman, or take it out of the cookie jar.
So, wait a couple days until he sees a judge, then you can decide.
Whatever you do, don't discuss ANYTHING about THIS CASE or ANY CASE over the jail telephone when he calls.
It's quite possible the judge will release him if he promises (agreeing in writing) to catch up what he allegely owes.
