My ex boyfriend lied to me about everything in his life, job, finances, women, legal issues, alcoholism, etc. in order to get me to put him on the birth certificate. If I hadn't been deceived, i would never have listed him as the father and he wouldnt have any claim to the baby (we are not married). he left after the baby was born, gives no $ and moved out of the area, sees the baby every few weeks for a few hours but often threatens to file for custody. Is there any legal recourse other than filing for custody myself?

Is he the father? If so then you cannot remove his name off the birth cert unless you get a DNA test through the courts on who the actual father is. His character has nothing to do with his legal rights. If you want custody and child support, then file for it.

Custody of a baby is not like title to a car. You had a baby with this guy and you are stuck with him for as long as you have that child. He has rights whether or not he is on the birth certificate. Since he is on the BC, the only way he would not have rights is if he is not the biological father. If you prove he is not the father then he has no rights.

You both made this baby, the baby needs a mom and a dad. You don't have to live together but you do have to get along for the baby. File for custody, Mothers usually get custody of babies. File for child support and enforce him paying and let him visit the child as often as he wants. The child's needs should come before your dislike of him. Good luck.
