I have a misdemeanor DV charge from 2 years ago, probation almost up in a year. Is there any chance of owning a firearm for future protection?

What code section were you convicted of?

In general, you will be prohibited by CA law from owning a firearm for 10 years.

If you were ORIGINALLY charged with a FELONY DV offense, the 10 year prohibition might not apply.
I suggest you discuss this matter with the attorney who represented you at trial, or speak with a couple local attorneys before trying to obtain, or actually obtaining any firearm.

    One last note, OP.
Under federal firearms laws, that prohibition from owning or possessing a firearm is for the remainder of your natural life, not ten years.
So, if you ever get popped for a federal crime anywhere in the US, possessing a firearm is far more serious than under California law, even if that somewhere else is in California.

The law can be a very confusing beast.

My usual advice is don't mess with the beast, especially the federal beast.
