Hello everyone! I'd like to know if I have the right as an adult with a guardian to get a job and start moving toward self sufficiency so that one day in my own guardian. Can my guardian stop me?

I'd really like to be on my own and care for myself.

Can my guardian stop me?

The LEGAL guardian of an adult is akin to a parent for a child (a minor).

Anything you do must be sanctioned by your guardian.

If you believe you no longer require a guardian, you discuss it with your guardian.

If the guardian agrees, he or she can petition the court to have the court recall the guardianship.

If the guardian disagrees, you'll have to take the matter to court.

To contest the guardianship you'll need a lawyer.

You'll also need your medical providers (physician, psychologist, psychiatrist) to concur and appear in court to testify you no longer require a guardian.

Your lawyer will assist you towards that end.

How old are you? Why do you have a guardian? How long have you had a guardian? Do you live in your guardian's home? Have you been dependent on your guardian for support? What's your education level?

Has your guardian said no to your goals? If so, why?
