Corporate Law board of directors overturning managers firing of board member

A 20 yr old board member/emplpoyee who has 2 roommates that are also board members of a non profit corporation was discharged. Asked for a (closed) special board meeting to overrule the managers decision. Is this appropriate action. In a previous board meeting it was decided that the manager had the right to fire employees without board approval.
