Beneficiary on death claim. Can person who made payments claim $ if not beneficiary?

Help my dad deviorced 3 years ago. Died from a brain tumor this week. I his daughter was listed as beneficiary on his policy. This change happened after diagnosis because my dad had no idea his ex was still beneficiary. The ex calls today and says that she has paid on a policy the last 3 years through their mutual previous employer and she is intidled to the 18,000 from the second policy. Company has me as beneficiary. Does she have grounds
