Does filing bankruptcy protect someone from legal judgments?

Yes it does, but it depends on what chapter you are able to file -- on a chapter 13 you will have to repay some of the debt back, if you qualify for a chapter 7 then almost all of your debt (not federal loans or child support) will be discharged under the bankruptcy. Filing bankruptcy puts a automatic stay on all creditors so they are unable to proceed on collection efforts
