back rent

i moved out of an apartment in july 2006 and officially turned over my key shortly there after. the apartment changed management and they are holding me responsible for rent from aug. 2006 up until july 2007. the new management states that i am now in collection for unpaid rent in an apartment during a time i did not occupy it...(i mean we are talking about a whole year). is this possible?
