Baby's last name

My baby is due in December and the father and i are not together anymore...he dumped me after i told him i was pregnant...I know without a doubt that he is the father...my question is...if he is not present at the hospital to sign the birth certificate, can i still give my baby his last name?

You can give the baby any last name you want, in most cases The problem is, if down the road you want to change it from his last name, you need his permission. So I think you need to think about how involved, or not involved he is going to be. If you want to give the baby Dad's last name I think its great, but you cannot change it without Dad's permission.
