I'm considering legally changing my last name as a result of some false but potentially damaging information about me that exists on the Internet. I was arrested for a crime I didn't commit, never charged and found factually innocent in court, yet the incident garnered a large amount of media attention--complete with libelous blog postings. I am fearful that potential employers may Google my name and read that information, which would then preclude me from even being interviewed.

If I change my name, will I be required to disclose my former name on most job applications? If so, changing my name wouldn't do much to solve my problem. Thanks in advance for your help.

As far as I know you don't have to give them that information. Most employers don't ask for that on applications, but there are some that do. Just don't apply to any casino's, banks, and other places that would probably do a criminal background check. I really hope the best for you and I hope your work experience isn't in these types of jobs. I'm not a lawyer so i don't know for sure. If I were you I would also look up employment laws in your state, call the labor board, and call an employment attorney and then you'll know for sure if you have too. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more, but hopefully this will help you out.
