Am I responsible for paying taxes on a rent to own home that is not in my name?

I am renting to own a mobile home from a local company. My name is no where on the deed. I received a letter in the mail today stating that they just paid the 2008 taxes on the home and that I am responsible for paying them the $250 or $18.75 a month. How is this legal? Paying the taxes was not on my contract that I signed. Do I have to pay this? Its awfully convenient that they sent this a few days before the rent is due. This was never discussed when I signed the contract either. Can anyone en-lighten me on what I should do? :)

Landlords (owners of the property) are responsible for the taxes. What they pay in taxes is generally reflected in the rent (or should be). It is unusual that a tenant is asked to pay the taxes; however, you are in a bit of a different situation since you are in a rent to own situation.

Contact the local company and ask them why you are expected to pay these taxes.
