12 Year Old Shoplifting

If a 12 year old is caught shoplifting, but it's something petty such as a t-shirt and some sharpies, will it be on her record at all? Or will it be on her record and not get wiped till she's 18? She has to get a background check, and she is 17 years of age now, for a volunteering position, so I'm worried. Will her record have that she shoplifted? When she got caught all that happened was she was brought into a room, filled out paperwork, charged $250.00, and wasn't allowed to the store for 6 months. Is her record messed up for now? Will it get wiped when she's 18?
