You should go to your bank and ask for a print out of the rent for the months they are stating are short. Your bank should be able to provide copies of the checks.

Does she have proof of what she was paying last year? Does it match up to the lease she signed?

Does your mother-in-law have proof of the taxes being paid those 9 years along with the home payment she was making?

You should do some more research. Some condo associations can kick you out. You may want to look into their policies they have in line for the owners. I know your not the owner, but if she has broken policies and procedures, then they can pretty much do what they want.
