State List of State Corporations, Liens, Licenses & Business Database

The following list contains information where to find important databases for each official U.S. State website. On these websites you can search for Corporate Names, Corporate Registrations, UCC Liens and Tax Liens and Professional Licenses. Most of the time the information provided by the state is free of charge. Certain advanced reports and certified results or documents are provided at an additional charge.

Business and Corporations Database

These databases provide critically important information, especially if you're seeking to create, incorporate or sue a business in the state. If you are seeking to file incorporation documents with the Secretary of State, you will typically be required to perform a search to ensure that the company name you desire has not been registered. Failure to do so will result in a loss of money and time.

If you're seeking to sue a corporation, you'll want to use the registrations database to obtain (i) the legal name of the company and (ii) the address for the agent to serve process (court documents such as a summons and complaint) upon the company. Getting this information from the start can save a great deal of time and effort.

Professional Licenses Database

Most states have a comprehensive licenses database. If you're seeking to discover whether an attorney, physician, notary or real estate agent is licensed with the state, this is the place too search. But it's not limited to those four professions. In fact, The New York State Division of Licensing Services also provides access to these categories and more.

Tax Liens Database

The tax liens database can certainly come in handy. For example you may be considering going into business with another person whom you suspect may be debt heavy. You may also be considering the purchase of an asset in distress which may have an existing lien. While there are many uses of the tax liens database, it's extremely useful as a warning sign of potential trouble ahead.
