We have owned a piece of rural property for more than 20 years which abuts state land. We recently received notice from the state that a part of our cabin which has been in place for that time is encroaching on state land and we are being told to tear down the structure or pay the state many thousands of $ for a temporary permit to remain in place. The agreement is renewable only at their option so I think it is a bad deal. I think that we have a good case for adverse possession and a "quiet title" lawsuit but don't know if that is effective against state agencies. Any comments?
