I was caught shoplifting at Home Depot by loss prevention. This was a very foolish and childish thing to do, especially for a 50+ y.o.

I have gathered that is best to get an attorney and please not guilty. But there's only one business day before court. Can I please guilty on my own and retain counsel after first hearing? Will this buy me time to actually meet with an attorney, or will it only be a few days in between?

Your first court appearance is likely your arraignment where you can plead not guilty.

You'll have plenty of time to get an attorney as it's likely that a trial would take weeks or months to schedule.

When you plead not guilty you may be offered a plea bargain.

Do not make the mistake of discussing anything with the prosecutor without your attorney present.

Accepting a plea bargain is an admission of guilt.

You're in a very dangerous predicament that can give you a criminal record. Be very afraid.

Plead not guilty and then keep your mouth shut. Anything you say can and WILL be used against you.
