A couple years ago I was convicted of a Minor in Consumption of Alcohol in Arizona. I live in California and recently bought a car and now have to get insurance under my name. However, I found out that I have points on my record from this charge. I was wondering if you can get points for any type of misdemeanor or if they have to be a traffic related offense? I tried calling the DMV and every time they were either no help or got disconnected when being transferred to another technician.

Yes, you can receive points. (for a "minor in consumption")

Was the offense committed in Arizona traffic related? Either way that's the answer to your question.

Helpful hint: don't commit any misdemeanors or other crimes and you won't have any problems.
