Fire Department Invoice

A couple of months ago I was driving in Clearview Township which is North of Toronto Ontario. I blew my head gasket so I pulled to the side of the road. Someone passing by called the fire department because white smoke from burning oil and coolant was coming out of my engine so they assumed there was a fire. The fire department showed up and inspected the vehicle. There was no fire. They took down my information for what they said was administrative purposes.

I recently recived a letter from Clearview Township with an invoice from the fire department for a "call out of the Township Clearview Fire Department with reference to a percieved van fire" asking that I forward the invoice to my insurance company.

The invoice is for $1050.00!!! Needless to say there is no way I can afford paying it and do not want to forward it to my insurance company for two reasons. I have since cancelled the insurance because my car was basically a write off and I don't want to it to affect my rates.

My question is whether or not I am legally obligated to pay for this. I did not call them out. All they did was check for a percieved fire that was not there.

Where do I go from here? If I refuse to pay is this going to affect my credit rating?

grin, the administrative purposes were to bill you. Most probably they have a law that makes you liable for fire department services. Most socialist countries have this, so I would not surprised to see this in Canada. You would have to check if they have a legal basis to bill you, it might even be printed on the bill. If they have, there won't be a way out, I fear. They usually bill as per man-hours and equipment that responded, regardless if it was needed or not.
