Choosing Parents at 15 Yrs. Old?

Hi Everyone,
We need some advice please!
My stepdaughter has a very bad relationship with her mom who has residential custody of her. She is 15 years old- will be 16 in October. We live in NY.
She wants to live with us instead of her mom. She is so unhappy there she is cutting herself. She feels much calmer with us. Her mom threatens if she lives with us, she will pull her from the good highschool she is going to. Can she do that? If she lives with us do we still have to pay child support?

Dad should file a motion for custody. If the child is 15 and she voices her concern about wanting to live with you, it is possible. Dad needs to prove it is in the cholds best interest for the custody change.

You didn't ask but be aware that the cutting probably won't stop as any stressor will set her off. Be prepared to put her in long term counseling. Research cutting online so you will know what you are dealing with and will maybe learn how to deal with it.

First thing is to get some counseling for the young lady before she really hurts herself.
