A friend has recently lost her husband who was self employed. She is trying to cancel his business credit card and was told that she needs to send the bank a copy of his death certificate. She is able to use the card as an "employee" but was not listed as a co-signer initially. She is hesitant to send a copy of the death certificate for fear of identity theft because of the personal information thereon. First, is a copy of the death certificate necessary in canceling a credit card; and second, is there danger of identity theft in providing such documentation to the bank?
