Can they make you work more then eight hours

Of course they can, unless you have a legally binding and enforceable contract that expressly says otherwise.

If you work more than 40 hours in a week, assuming you are non-exempt, you will be owed overtime. But nowhere in the law of any state (even the ones that require overtime for over 8 in a day, which Florida does not) does the law guarantee you no more than an 8 hour day.

Nobody can make you do anything.

Can you be fired for not staying to work beyond the scheduled 8 when asked? Yes.
Your employer doesn't have to give you any hours at all, but does have to pay you appropriately for the hours you do work.

They (assuming you mean your employer) can't make you work one minute. What they can do is fire you if you refuse.

Depends on who "they" are and what my relationship to "them" is.

If "they" refers to an employer and "you" refers to an employee of that employer, of course an employer may legally require most employees work more than eight hours (there are exceptions). Is there some reason why you thought the answer might be otherwise? Obviously, no employer may physically force an employee to work, but the employer may impose consequences if an employee refuses to work, including termination.
