What to do with a 17 year old?

My son will be 17 by next summer and wants to go to Europe with his youth group. The problem is that it is during his dad's visitation time. What rights does my son have as far as making his own decisions as far as when he goes to see his dad or leaving the country - does he have to have his dad's permission? Dad lives in California and we live in Colorado. Also, do I have to go back to California if I need to take this to the courts?

Has your son spoken with his father? Yes, he needs to agree, and maybe you can work out and alternate visitation schedule to accomodate the trip without going to court. Make sure it is in writing and contact the court to see what you need to do to temporarily alter the visitation schedule.
