My friend lived in the USA for 15 years. He received his green card in 1980 but returned home to the Philippines in 1994. He has lost his green card and would like to come back to visit his children and friends. Could you please tell me what type of visa he will need to apply for, is there anyway we can check the status of his green card since he lost it, and how long can he stay here on a visa?

You need to ask the immigration bureaucrats your question.

He should contact the local embassy and they will walk him through the process and fees. It would help if he has a copy or number of his GC. The other option is to get a family member or immigration lawyer(with POA) simply do the paper work for lost green card, mail back and forward, and summit for a new one. It would be possible if they have his recent biometrics on file. But given he has had the green card that long; he might need new biometrics and might return only via the embassy. The embassy might give him temporary traveling papers.
