During the hiring process, I asked in lew of my benefits I could have a higher wage. In the process they determined this was a rufusal. I told them I accepted the position before hand. Then they offered me a lower wage. Even then I accepted. Now they say thank you for your time. Is what they did illegal?

No. If they want to rescind the offer based on your asking for higher pay in lieu of benefits, they may do so.
