verbal agreement HELP NEEDED

i hired a skip just b 4 xmas and the company should have collected it on the 21st dec they didn't show up , so when i called them he said it would be after the holidays , so i said that i would not pay and they replied ok as it was thier fault they coundn't collect due to too much traffic , so i called them after to collect and he was abuseive on the phone and said that i DID have to pay !!! how do i stand when he gave a verbal agreement over the phone .
