We bought a house in 1996. It was our only residence in the United States and we used it when we came back to the United States in the summer for vacation. We were living abroad most of the year. In 2001, we took a job in the US, 2000 miles away from our house in Maine and several States away. Can we consider that we lived in the house enough between 1996 to 2001 so that we would not have to pay the taxes on the benefits made.

You didn't tell us how long you lived in the house...so tell us.
