My CHP Experience

On June 25th 2007 I was scheduled to participate in my first Qualifications Appraisal Interview with the California Highway Patrol. During the interview the Appraisals panel looked into my personal background and any related driving offenses that I had. I explained that I was arrested twice for misdemeanor driving infractions and several other citations for no insurance or seatbelt violations. I further explained that I was currently working for the Department of Homeland Security for the past six years as a Deportation Assistant. After the interview I was told that I would receive my results within a few weeks to see if I had passed. A few weeks later I received my results and passed successfully with a score of 70. Days later I received a notice that stated that I was given a Conditional Offer of Employment contingent upon passing the rest of the hiring phases.

About a month later, I was contacted by Officer Lopez of The California Highway Patrol Background Division. She explained to me that she wanted to schedule me for my initial background interview. I met with Officer Lopez one week later in her office at the Border Division in Kearney Mesa. Upon meeting Officer Lopez that day, she explained to me that she wanted me to go over my application and update any information that may have changed since my panel interview. I completed that task and then was asked to write down in detail what exactly happened with those two misdemeanor driving arrests. I was given blank stationary paper and time to narrate what happened so that she could fully understand. After I finished, Officer Lopez stated that now she wanted me to verbally explain the driving record while she tape recorded the conversation. After she pressed record, Officer Lopez then had me read a statement regarding truthfulness, falsifying information and omitting anything in continuances with her interview. She asked me if I understood what I just read and what that meant to me in my own words. I then said that it meant that any person trying to lie to gain employment would be barred from applying again in the future. Officer Lopez then began to inquire as to what happened with those two arrests. After about forty five minutes of explaining to Officer Lopez about the two arrests, she stated that I did a good job today with expressing to her about what happened. She then stated that she would have liked for me to have been more thorough with the Appraisal Panel interview in regards to those two arrests. I stated to Officer Lopez that I did do my best with explaining the driving record with them. I stated that I received a passing score, so that shows that I expressed myself so that the Appraisal Panel could get a clear picture of who I was as a person as well as a potential employee. Officer Lopez then began to conclude her interview and stated that unfortunately she would not be able to recommend my name for continuing in the hiring phase, and that I should reapply. I thanked Officer Lopez for taking her time up and she escorted me outside the office and said good luck and shook my hand.

About a month later I contacted Officer Williams of the California Highway Patrol Recruitment Unit at the Border Division. I explained to Officer Williams that things didn't go so well during my Background interview and asked Officer Williams what would be my next step. Officer Williams stated that it would be in my best interest to complete another application and send it in as soon as possible. Officer Williams took down my home mailing address so he could personally send the application himself. I completed the application and mailed it in. About two weeks later I received a notice from the Highway patrol stating that my written exam would be waived and to report to a physical conditioning day. I successfully passed the physical and was scheduled for another Qualifications Appraisal Interview a few days later. As soon as my panel interview began the interviewers questioned me by asking why I was disqualified from the background interview the first time. I stated that my background investigator Officer Lopez stated to me that I did a good job with her explaining my two driving arrests and that she wanted me to be more thorough with the panel, regarding my two driving arrest again. During the panel interview I was asked to explain what happened with those two arrests and what measures had I taken to alleviate this problem from re-occurring? After fifteen more minutes of personal background questions, the panel interview concluded. I was told I would receive my results in a few weeks, if I was successful in the interview. A few weeks later I received my results with a passing score of 90 percent. I did an extremely better job than I did before and I was looking forward to meeting my next background investigator to show that my persistence was paying off.
