After 17 years I was notified by the California State Board of Equilization that in 1995 I failed to pay 1500.00 in sales tax. I have no idea what they are talking about. I did have a business but left Cal with a clean slate.......... I thought. Is there a statue of limitations on this?????? If not, what are some options?
It will be difficult, but not impossible, for California to collect any money form you in another state.
They can pester you, annoy you, and even harass you for the $1,500 they allege you owe.
Unfortunately, there is no statute of limitations on government owed debts.
I suggest you try and reach a settlement.
See if they will allow you to settle for three or four cents on the dollar.
But, get everything on writing before giving them money.
And, if you decided to pay, use a money order.
You can always consult an attorney, but that'll eventually cost you $500 (or more).
Thus, a $500-600 settlement might serve you best.
