On a public forum when someone asked about an agency I responded with some things that weren't nice but what I believe to be truths. This person has now emailed me threatening to pursue swift and aggressive legal action for slander.

I have deleted the things I posted and retracted my statements.

This has only happened in the course of a few hours.

Does this person really have a case against me for something I said in an internet forum? And if they do what can I do to protect myself?

You can protect yourself by not talking.

You should never deny or admit to anything without the advice of counsel.

So, you can help yourself most by not saying or posting anything else.

By the way, once you post anything on the Internet and delete it, it never goes away.

It can always be resurrected, thanks to Google and Yahoo.

Army Judge is dead on. Once something has been 'published' and read by a third person, the deed is done. If what you said is truth, you have little to worry about although a court will decide who is right about the truth. Most online threats of litigation are no more than threats.
