Signing parental rights away in australia

I`m writing to ask about parental rights in austalia and can you sign your rights away on a child you had no choice in having a very close old school friend of mine has got himself in a situation the girl who was never his girlfriend had told him she could not have kids she needed the ivf program to have kids was the story she told him and that everything was safe their was no chance of a baby.After a few months she told him she was pregnant and keeping the baby and he was the father he did sign the birth certificate but has never had the child a day in his life and dont intend to.The child is 10 today and he has no intention on having anything to do with the child he feels really betrayed by the mother and her actions that he wants to sign he`s rights away can he in australia?

No australia attorneys follow this board but in the US you cannot just sign away your rights because you do not want the child. He needs to see an Australian attorney to see if they allow it without a subsequent adoption.
