So my boyfriend and I just moved to Nevada. I have family here and he does not. He went to a store one day and stupidly tried to steal a $4 power strip.

He got caught on the way out of the store. They took him into a small room. They asked for all of his information as well as his address. We had just moved here so he didn't know the address we were staying at yet. He told them this and they said it was okay.

They told him he might get a letter in the mail. No cops were called and no charges were filed. Well he did end up getting a letter. It was requesting $200 for assest recovery. He called them and planned to pay a fourth of it every other week.

I became ill and was in the hospital with a very serious kidney infection that could have led to kidney failure had i not gone to the hospital when i did. Well he forgot all about it and we have been having to donate plasma in order to pay our bills. We are just now starting to get back on track. Today he got a call from a law firm asking to call back as soon as he got the message. What does this all mean? Should he try and call THE STORE first to arrange payments. Or call the law office back. I'm freaking out. I don't know what to do.

The store (you should not have named) has nothing to do with this now. Its in hands of law firm handling Civil Demand case. You need to call them otherwise you could provoke them to take actions that will have long term dire consequences on you and him both.

Have you ever heard the saying, you can't get blood out of a turnip, or there is no flavor is pot of ROCK soup?

If you can't pay, you can't pay.

There will be no criminal charges filed at this point.

That ship sailed.

If I were you, I'd stop communicating with the alleged LAW FIRM.

They aren't a prosecuting attorney, its a LAW FIRM. That's nothing. Lawyers can't make you do anything.

By the way, YES, I am a lawyer, so this I do know.

So, stop stressing over nothing.

Stop communicating or responding to the alleged law firm.

You and he should try to improve your lives, get better jobs, save some money, keep moving on up.

Take care of your medical and personal problems.

Obey all laws, and I am not lecturing you or him. We all make dumb decisions. Thank God, he didn't kill anyone.

Ignore tha law firm. They might try to ruin your credit, but I don't think they can, if things are as tough as you say, every dollar counts, especially if you're selling plasma to survive.

I did not attack I made a clear point that you have failed to understand for years now! by your own admission up until a year or so ago you did not even know about Civil Demand or its consequences. You are NOT qualified to speak on it in my humble view. Your giving OP advice that could cause him great harm. If you want to help tell him the consequences or even the odds (if you know them) that the firm will act on these. However its very poor advice for you (with a law degree) to advise users to ignore the law and potential consequences. Your not helping by doing so and you shame this site by doing so especially with your Moderator status.
