Seven years after my divorce and still have his bills on my credit

Need legal advice please! Divorced a horrible man 7 years ago, we both signed the papers that outlined division of property and debts. We had joint credit cards, which my husbad retained. In the agreement he was to be responsible for these debts, and either pay them off and close them or transfer to new cards and OUT of my name. I discovered about a year after our divorce he had not done that, I spoke with him and he promised to take care of it. I recently discovered after 7 years he is still using these cards and has them maxed out. Not only would I be liable if he did not pay them but it is ruining my credit. It has already cost me money in that loans I have taken out are at higher interest rates because of these credit cards. Also he is very ill and told he will not live long. What should I do? Hope his estate will pay these off in the event of his demise? (That feels like sticking my head in the sand.) My son tells me the ex is purposefully doing this to hurt me. I let him have the house, boat and other properties, I kept my end of the bargain.
