Student Loans Sallie Mae cashed check but didn't apply to loan

Payment was sent to Sallie Mae August 2007 and cashed. We have a copy of the cancelled check. In 2011 ex-wife claimed payment not made, we inquired to Sallie Mae and they verified they received but could not say where it was applied. Last month the advocate told us the funds had been refunded to the loan company who we obtained a loan from, and we requested documentation. We received a call from Sallie Mae advocate last week and we're told they still have the funds where should they send them. I believe we are entitled to interest on the $1625 they have held for 7 years. Can we demand 1.5% monthly for the last 7 years.
